Smartphone vs DSLR: Which is Best?

Updated: Mar 21, 2020

For the past two weeks in COMM 208, we have been working on photography with both smartphones and DSLR cameras. I don't really have a big background in photography, and so I was excited to have the chance to practice and learn new skills and techniques.

Critique

My roommate's stuffed hippo, shot on a Canon Rebel T5i with an aperture value of 3.5.

A banana sundae latte at First Sip Cafe, shot on iPhone XR.

Overall, my photos from my phone camera and the DSLR were both pretty high quality. As smartphones become more advanced, the camera technology in them has evolved to produce photos that are comparable to DSLR photos, especially with developments like Portrait Mode in Apple devices.

The DSLR photos were a bit higher quality in terms of their resolution because a camera does not have to account for all the additional features of a smartphone.

Cars driving on Sheridan Road, shot on a Canon Rebel T5i with a 2500 shutter speed.

My roommate shaking her head, shot on an iPhone XR.

The shots for the DSLR were more difficult to set up, especially with trying to focus objects in motion, while the only thing needed to focus on a smartphone is a tap on the screen.

However, my smartphone camera did not allow for adjustments of the shutter speed while shooting objects in motion, so I was not able to "stop motion" like I could using the DSLR.

This exercise was definitely good practice in photography skills and I've learned a lot about when it is appropriate to use a DSLR to take photos and when a smartphone camera will produce images of similar quality.
